Sex sells and unfortunatly, we're buying.

This weekend I was at a conference for online media professionals in LA. As usual, all the old farts who run the major news organizations were looking for the best way to appeal to the 18-24 year old demographic (us).
I heard some interesting ideas, but one thing struck me as odd and even somewhat offensive - all of their ideas for appealing to the "kids" had to do with sex, drinking etc...
Sex, drugs and rock and roll right? That's what the kids these days are into. Throwing Paris Hilton's expensive boobies in our faces is the only way to make us pay attention to something right? Helping us find the best brew in town is the only way to reach out to our alcohol soaked college minds, isn't it?
Newsflash: I already know where to buy the best beer in town and if I want to read about sex I'll pick up the latest issue of Cosmo (barf).
I think that adults sell us short. I think they underestimate us. I know so many people who are genuinely passionate about the world they live in. Who care what's going on in their neighborhoods, their country and their world. Perhaps too many of us are too passive. Perhaps too many of us buy into the illusion that everything will be OK no matter what we do to other people or to the world around us.
It's time to wake up guys. I watched Paris' "porn" just like the rest of you and it was BORING. Not nearly as exciting as the things going on in my neighborhood. Let's invest ourselves in our community and stop being so plugged in to television and superficiality.
I don't care what your political leanings are - just CARE ABOUT SOMETHING !!! ANYTHING!!
Decide what matters to you, what you're passionate about and DO SOMETHING.
Don't let the media/our professors/our parents sell short our intelligence or our passion.
Show them what we've got.
And pass me that beer while you're at it.
*soapbox ends here*

Comments:
Right On!!!! I completely agree! I am sick of people telling me what myself and my generation are all about. Did anyone ask me or look at what I am doing with my life? I think not. I know that I am not the only one in our generation who actually gives a *#&% about the world that surrounds us. I see people every day in my age group who are taking a proactive stance on the issues and situations that affect their lives.

Yeah sure, sex, drugs, blah, blah, and blah are a part of our generation. But what generation in our history hasn't had them?

Blah, blah, blah, blah...good ol' days...blah, blah, blah!!! Shut up and accept that the world has changed. Just because things are a little different doesn't mean that they are worse than they were before.

So...to all those who think that "we" only think about sex, drugs and Rock n' Roll...open your eyes. Look and see what's really out there.

You'll find me. And the countless other people in my generation who are ready to take on the world and take a stand for what we believe in. Remember my name...because I guarantee you that it is not the last time that you will here it!

So...Megan...pass me one too! I'll sip on some suds while we show'em what's up!

It's on!
